As she falls the past year flashes before her eyes. The day they met in the coffee shop, snow fluttering to the ground. A simple conversation turned into months of bliss with an unfortunate end. The weeks passed filled with nights on the town and lazy days spent watching movies on the couch in each others arms ending with midnight hours filled with passion. He meant the world to her, there was no other man she could see herself with. To him though, she was just another name. He proposed after what seemed like the 9 happiest months of her life. She was ecstatic and beside herself with plans of the fairytale wedding she'd wanted as a child. While she worked day and night with the details of this wonderful day, he found a new love with a new woman. It was after the date had been set, the smallest detail put into place, and the invitations sent, that this blushing bride decided on a cream white dress with lace sleeves and a ruffled bottom. It complemented her porcelain complexion as she stared at her reflection. With her hair pulled up in an intricate braid and her makeup done expertly, she went to find her soon-to-be groom. With it being the day before she wanted his opinion. What she found was not what she ever expected. She found him with the other woman and a whimper escaped her lips. He yelled after her as he swore, she ran until she could no longer feel her legs. Her lungs were burning and her mind was screaming "I thought he loved me". She tore at her hair so it fell around her face. Her makeup was smudged and running in streams down her cheeks. She fell to her knees at the edge of lake that pooled into a beautiful waterfall. Cautiously she stepped into the shallow water, peering over the edge with a sick curiosity. As her beau screamed she threw herself over the edge and gave herself to the freezing depths below.
These lips are cherry scented, but they stick like superglue, I paint them lavender, turn a tattoo into bruise She says I'm mediocre and I guess that's very true She wants to chastise me for things I did not do
The woman stands at the edge of the lake on christmas eve, her mind begins to wander. As she stares across the tranquil waters a strange energy of nostalgia surrounds her. She is transported back to a time of love and warmth. She remembers the smell of pine and vanilla emanating from the living room. The candles lit in the kitchen gave off a warm, familiar feeling. With her hair mussed and nightgown ruffled, she remembers rushing down the stairs early christmas morning eager to open the presents wrapped in shining paper. Her mother would hear and come downstairs to greet her daughter, laughing while smoothing down her curly wild hair. She remembers how her mother would make tea before coming in to see the joy the small gifts gave. Once all the the presents had been revealed she had curled up on the couch with her mother, a big smile on her face as they watched old christmas movies in black and white. The snow drifting from the heavens brought back to reality. She fell to her knees and wept in remembrance of those kind and merry times, ones she would never know again. The life she longed for was taken from her. And now on this cold winter night she fades from this world, another lost soul. At least her last moments were spent in the happiest of her time, and that is where she is choosing to stay for eternity; In the fragile arms of christmas night.
